Renters Rights Act 2025
Do you currently live in rented private accommodation, and you have been told by your landlord that pets are not allowed?
Well, I have some good news for you. Very soon as of 1st May 2026. The legislation is going to change the blanket ban on pets is getting kicked into touch.
Section 16A Requesting Consent to Keep a Pet
Instead, it is going to be replaced with new legislation called the Renters Rights Act 2025 and Section 16A will enable tenants to request consent to keep a pet in their home.
Landlords cannot unreasonably refuse consent and even if they do you will have a right to appeal their decision.
All you need to do is to put your request in writing and include a description of the pet for which the consent is sort.
Good News for Pets and their Owners
Why is this such good news? Well, pet families that are currently in rented accommodation but have to move for work or personal reasons, will have far more properties to pick from, reducing the likelihood that they will have to give up their pets because of landlord pet bans.
Secondly all the dogs and cats sitting in rescue centres will have a much bigger pool of potential adopters.
So, it is a big win for pet families in rented accommodation and an even bigger win for pets waiting to find a new home.
