The Real Serial Cat Killer

A cat is laying dead on a drievway after drinking toxic de-ider product

The Serial Cat Killer Myth

The Real Danger Hiding on Your Driveway

For years, rumours of a Serial Cat Killer have gripped the UK, fueled by thousands of sudden and unexplained cat deaths and reports of deliberate poisonings. However, investigations including a major 2018 Met Police investigation found no evidence of a human culprit.

If there is not a killer stalking the streets, what is happening?

My investigation points to a much more common, accidental, and invisible threat Ethylene Glycol.

The Science of the Toxic Puddle

While most antifreeze products now contain a bittering agent to deter pets from drinking it, many spray-on de-icers do not. This creates a lethal trap through a straightforward process of evaporation:

  • Application you spray your car windscreen on a frozen morning
  • The Runoff  the de-icer melts the ice and the sludge drips onto the ground below forming a toxic puddle
  • Concentration throughout the day the water in the puddle evaporates, but the ethylene glycol does not
  • The Trap what remains a highly concentrated, tasteless, toxic puddle.

Ingestion

Outdoor cats unable to find fresh water due to the freezing conditions, drink from the Ethylene Glycol puddle or groom themselves after walking through the puddle. Just one teaspoon of Ethylene Glycol can prove fatal.

Why It Looks Like Organ Failure

Ethylene glycol is metabolized into crystals that physically shred the kidneys from the inside out. This explains why many vets record sudden multi-organ failure in otherwise healthy, young cats. Because the deaths are spread across neighbourhoods and seasons, they appear linked, fueling conspiracy theories about a human serial cat killer.

Red Flags What to Watch For

If your cat shows these signs, it is a medical emergency.

  • The Drunken Walk – Stumbling, wobbling, or rear legs collapsing
  • Excessive Drooling or sudden, unexplained vomiting
  • Lethargy, extreme tiredness or unconsciousness

How You Can Help

The Serial Cat Killer narrative causes panic but does NOT save lives. Understanding the chemistry of de-icers does.

  • Switch to “Pet Safe” de-icers (propylene glycol-based)
  • Clean up any spills on your driveway immediately with plenty of water
  • Share this post to shift the focus from myths to real-world prevention
